Checking Status Of Federal Tax Refund

Once you have filed your taxes, you will be eager to know when you are getting your refund if you are eligible. Also, you know the refund amount only after you receive the check from the federal government. Several people who have filed for taxes are eagerly waiting for their checks because they could use the cash that is coming as a return to buy something they have wanted to for a long time.

The federal government understands this eagerness and they have provided several means to check on your refund status. One of the easiest methods to check on your refund status is to visit the IRS website.

In order to check on the refund status or trace it, you will need some basic information like your Social Security number and filing date. Sometimes having your ITIN number is also helpful. However, when you provide your SSN, the IRS website gives you all the details. On the website there is a link called 'where is my refund' and when you click on this, it will ask for your Social Security number. When you enter the number, you will get the amount and check number in detail. However, sometimes this particular field will be empty. Do not panic because it simply means that your check has not been processed yet.

Usually it takes the IRS around seventy-hours after filing of returns to acknowledge the same. Therefore, you should allow this time to pass before checking to see the status of your return. Depending on what you filled out on your tax return form, you will be mailed a check to an address that is there with the IRS or the amount will be directly credited into your bank account. However, getting refunds take time. So, be patient. It takes around 28 days after the IRS approves your refund for it to arrive by mail and around 2 weeks for it to show in your bank account after the approval. Also, the IRS website will give you date on when refunds are being dispatched.
