What Is The Definition Of A Stock Market ?

As the name suggests, an apt definition of the stock market can be a public marketplace where a company's stock or derivative is sold at a pre-decided and approved price. This marketplace is a virtual place where economic transactions take place. The company's stock and derivative are available on a platform known as the stock exchange.

It means that a stock market is a place where the public can trade in the stocks of various companies. It is a common place where different people discuss the prices of the stocks of various companies. There are several stock markets in the US, and many more all over the world. When people meet at a stock exchange, they discuss the worth of the stocks of a company and then they agree upon a certain price. This everyday fixation of price of the stocks is what the market is all about. There are two main types of people who influence the pricing of the stocks -- the bulls and the bears. Both these types of investors together run the stock markets.

Companies that accept public investment is listed on the stock exchanges. A company can choose to list in any stock exchange if it meets the criteria laid down by that particular exchange. Among all the existing stock exchanges in the US, the most popular ones are NYSE, and the Dow Jones.

Each stock exchange has its own requirements for a company to get listed. The company will be given a unique tag name and a symbol using which they can trade in the stock exchange that they have listed in. A company can also trade in more than one stock exchange. Some companies trade locally, while some trade all over the country or all over the world. A company that trades across the world will be listed in several stock exchanges of different countries.
