Investors planning to invest in that particular company have to look for the tag or the symbol first to identify the company. Among the thousands of companies, it is quite possible that two or more companies have the same name or identical names. This could get really confusing for the investor. That is why they are assigned a unique symbol and tag name. Even if the company trades in different stock exchange, they will use the same symbol and tag name to be identified. In the US, the stock market symbols for companies vary depending on the stock exchange. For example, the NYSE stock exchange uses four letters, while the NASDAQ uses three letters.
