The owner will also get disabled people or people with handicaps coming to see the house. It is up to the owner to take the best offer without any prejudice.
However, there may be a situation where what you decide as an owner can be violation of law of discrimination against different types of people. Most types of housing are covered by these laws with the exception of those that operate under shelter laws like homes for battered women or homes for hearing impaired.
Under the Fair Housing Laws, it is illegal in the United States to show home selling discrimination based on a person’s color, creed, nationality, handicap, sexual orientation, etc. The following are considered as home selling discrimination:
- Refusal to sell your home
- Refusal to negotiate the price
- Making your home unavailable or setting conditions for the sale
- Falsely claiming that the home is not for sale
- Denying membership in a service related to the sale of housing
If you indulge in any of the above activities, it could result in prosecution and criminal charges being brought against you. In addition, you cannot advertise or in any other way make any statement that shows a restriction or preference based on race, color, sex, nationality, religion, handicap, etc. If you do so, it will be seen as home selling discrimination and you can be punished by law.
