Most real estate developers build twin homes because land costs are too expensive and they need a higher density of homes in order to keep costs down. Sometimes twin homes are constructed in order to satisfy federal or local housing regulations.
Problems with Buying Twin Home:
Although a cheaper alternative, there are problems associated with buying a twin home. For instance, you buy a twin home and then you find out that your neighbor does not like to maintain his yard, it can cause a problem. Your home might have a well-maintained and manicured yard while the adjoining yard is unkempt; this can cause the value of your home to dip.
There have been cases where neighbors have been laid off and were forced to sell. The new neighbor purchasing the twin home might not take care of the yard which can result in the yard and the home becoming an eyesore. This can make it impossible for you to sell your side and if you do, you will end up selling for a lower price and thus, losing equity on your home.
When buying a twin home, it is important that you meet your neighbor and make sure that you are compatible. This should be done before signing of the purchase agreement. However, if the other side of the twin home is a rental, you should proceed with a lot of care and think twice before buying your side.
