How to Find a Pension Plan:
Here are some tips that will help to find your pension plan. Some are easier than the others but none of the tips (or sources) will lead you directly in one easy step to the pension plan. But do remember that small steps can be extremely helpful.
In order to find a pension plan, it is important to find the company that sponsored the plan. Do bear in mind that the plan and company are not one and the same. The best way to start is with the federal Department of Labor and Pension Counseling Projects. Ask these departments for guidance in your search. If that is not successful, you should then try and approach the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC).
You should try to get in touch with former co-workers who worked longer in the company than you did. They might be able to tell you what happened to the company. If the former co-workers are getting pension checks, find out from them where the checks are coming from and you can contact the source for your pension.
The other method to find a pension plan is to get in touch with the union that represented workers at the company. You should do this even if you were not part of the union. You might be able to get some information as other employees like you might have asked the union the same question.
You might have a document about your pension plan that has the name and address of the pension plan administrator. Try to locate the administrator and find out what happened to your pension. If the address of administrator is different from the company’s old address, the chances are that administrator might still be reachable.
