Other than that, the application process to receive the loan is quite similar to any other mortgage loan.
To get a certificate of eligibility, you have to complete VA Form 26-1880. Submit the form to any of VA Eligibility Centers and request for the certificate. Do not forget to attach copies of your discharge and / or separation papers covering the active military duty, which will show the active duty dates and the type of discharge you received.
Then scout around for the perfect home. Once you find it, sign a purchase agreement with the seller. Thereafter, approach the VA center and request for a home appraisal. This is usually done by the lender. In order to speed up the process, contact the nearest VA office to get more details on the Speed Up Telephone Appraisal System.
Once the appraisal is done with, apply for a mortgage with the lender. In order to ensure you get the most competitive interest rates, shop around. You will definitely find a loan to suit your pocket. Then just set a date and location to close the mortgage with the lender.
Just a few things to remember in order to apply for a VA loan:
- While the appraisal of the home is being done, the lender can gather and verify information with regard to your income and credit history.
- Your lender could be authorized by the Veterans Administration to do an automatic processing when he receives the appraised value of the home. If so, the VA loan can be approved and closed without the lender waiting for your credit history verification.
- In case the loan has to be approved by the Veterans Administration, make sure that the lender sends your application to the local VA office. The office will revert to the lender on whether the loan has been approved or not under the VA loan guidelines.
