What Does Whistleblower Mean ?

Whistleblowers are employees who speak about the misconduct of an organization to a fellow employee or a superior within the company. They may tell it to one person or several people at the organization.

Several experts have studied the act of whistle blowing and they find it ridiculous when a person chooses to do so. Under what situation one resort to the act does is a mystery. One of the possible explanations is that it could be due to a rejection they faced within the organization. Also, another way of looking at it is that people will avoid whistle blowing if their organization had a proper complaint addressing system. If employees do not have an ombudsperson to talk to, they may resort to such acts.

In England, policemen would blow whistles to attract the attention of vehicles or pedestrians on the road if they find them doing something wrong. So, they same meaning has been adapted to describe people who do similar things in an organization. Whistle blowing is considered equivalent to fraud by the law. Every management or company believes that there is an appropriate way to address grievances by a person instead of discussing it with people who have no control over the issue. This would also mean that the person is tampering the image of the organization with others.

Whistleblowers also face frequent reprisals within the company. In order to believe the whistleblowers, the legal system should have a proof how their employer has violated a law or acted illegally causing the person to behave in such a manner.
