Cosmetology Career Advice

A cosmetologist is a person who gives beauty associated services like shampooing, cutting, coloring and styling hair. In addition, a cosmetologist gives advice on to take care of hair, how to straighten it, how to give it permanent waves, or how to lighten or color the hair color.

A cosmetologist can be also trained to give manicures, pedicures, scalp treatments, facial treatments, makeup analysis, or clean and style hairpieces and wigs.

Here is some helpful cosmetology career advice:

If you do not want to provide all the services, you can just offer specialized services as a cosmetologist. Being a cosmetologist is the easy part. However, you have to pay special attention to maintaining a clean work area besides sanitizing all your work instruments. You should just work through appointments and keep records of hair color and permanent wave formulas used by your regular clients.

Make sure you are in good health and have good stamina as you will be spending a lot of time on your feet. A full time cosmetologist usually puts in a 40-hour week but it is seen that longer hours are more common.

Sometimes, prolonged exposure to hair and nail color can cause irritation. So, it is in your best interests to wear protective clothing like aprons and plastic gloves.

All states in the US require cosmetologists to be licensed and the qualifications for license are different in each state. However, the general requirement to get a license is to graduate from a state-licensed cosmetologist school and you have to be at least 16-years. There are a few states that require a cosmetologist to pass a physical examination; some states require high school graduation; while others require as little as eighth grade education. In order to get your license, you will have to pass a written test and show your ability to perform basic cosmetology services.

There are many vocational schools that offer classes in cosmetology. A full-time program can last anywhere from 9 months to 25 months. A part of your training, you will have practical work besides demonstrations and classroom study. You will have to attend lectures on use of instruments and their care, sanitation and hygiene, anatomy, chemistry, physiology and how to recognize simple skin ailments. In addition, you will learn communication skills, and acquire knowledge of sales and general business practices.
