The trends in stock market have varied to extreme amounts since several decades. One of the first industries to start trading in the local markets was the cloth industry perhaps. It is the age old industry. The United States is a major importer of cotton clothing. It gets cotton clothing from other countries. So, when the global markets are taken into account, the clothing retail industry is one of the first sectors to start outsourcing and importing finished goods. It was soon followed by the FMCG (fast moving consumer goods) industry. So, previously studying market trends in the United States was not that difficult.
However, in the current day economic scenario almost every type of industry has its outsourcing operations, and is also public limited companies. There are thousands of companies from varied industries that are trading in the stock markets. From the 1940s to the 1960s, there were only a handful of companies. However, all companies trading in the stock markets depend on the NASDAQ scores or the DOWJONES scores. These, in turn, depend on the global economic trends. In the previous century, the stocks performance depended only on the United States Stock Exchange Bureau.
