Any spill in the environment might reach the public drinking water supply. This spill usually occurs not from vehicles but from gasoline delivery trucks or leaks from underground storage tanks.
Gasoline is also one the major sources of pollutant gases. Unburned gasoline when left in the atmosphere reacts with the sunlight to produce photochemical smog. In addition, if ethanol is present in the gasoline, it will further increase the volatility of the gasoline.
Most spills occur because people make mistake or get careless, due to equipment breaking down, deliberate acts of vandalism and illegal dumping. When such spills find their way into oceans and fresh water bodies, you can see the oil floating. Under these circumstances, gasoline spreads very quickly across the water surface and keeps getting thinner and thinner until it is a very thin layer called a sheen. This sheen often looks like a rainbow. Gasoline is harmful to marine mammals and birds, and it can also harm fish and shellfish. Many animals also ingest the gasoline when they try to clean themselves and this leads to poisoning.
Because gasoline can cause harm to the environment, we should try to prevent spillage. We should not avoiding dumping gasoline soaked cloth into the sewer or garbage. We should not dump gasoline in anywhere. It is best to let it evaporate and during that period, you should not smoke or light a fire because gasoline fumes are highly combustible.
